Wilderness Survival Knowledge Base

Wilderness survival.........? A debate came up recently about wilderness survival. And I thought I would bring it here. See, a man decided to go into the wilderness for a year and survive. Using only what he could carry in a back pack. Among these supplies, would be notebooks and pencils to document his journey. After the year was up, he would write a book about the journey. The question for you is, what do you think about this? Where would you go to do this? And what would you bring? Can't wait to hear what you all put.

What is the best key wilderness survival? A question was asked in the hunting section asking whether or not you would be able to survive in the wilderness with just your street clothes and a knife. Everybody said yes but I have my doubts about all the people who said yes. So to satisfy my curiosity I've asked this question to see if people really know what is accepted to be the top key to survival situations. The question is not vague at all. There is one key factor to survival that every expert I've studied under and read about agrees on. The question is not vague at all. There is one key factor to survival that every expert I've studied under and read about agrees on.

What are some good short stories about wilderness survival appropriate for 7th graders? I'm teaching a unit on survival surrounding Jack London's The Call of the Wild. We're focusing on the idea of primordial instinct and the questionably immoral things that people and animals do when survival instincts kick in. We're also talking about which of those things we consider excusable and inexcusable and why. I'm looking for short stories (preferably fiction rather than totally true personal narratives) that focus on these themes. Ideally, I'd like to have them read something that isn't about the cold -- maybe something about a desert, ocean, or tropical location would work better. Any ideas?
Who else thinks that a video game about wilderness survival would be fun? Imagine a video game with a modern graphics engine, that not only puts you in the wild, but forces you to survive in it. You would have to harvest edible plants, learn to make traps or weapons, figure out how to make a fire/shelter, etc. Not only do I think it would be fun, but educational in case you were stuck in a real survival situation. I mean, sure, it wouldn't be exactly like the real thing, and in video games you get infinite lives; but it could still provide some valuable information and keep you somewhat entertained.

What do you think is the most important wilderness survival skill and why? I think it's the will to survive. Wilderness survival, would you survive ? all of us hunters and outdoorsman/woman should have a basic understanding of how to survive in the wilderness, anything can happen. Your truck, ATV, or snowmobile can brake down miles from town, that pretty much forces you to spend the night in the woods (happens more then you know along with many other scenarios). What sort of training have you had in the ways of wilderness survival ? Do you always carry your basic survival tools, like a knife, fire starter, small med. kit, map & compass, water and snake, etc.(basic day pack) when you go into the woods ? I ask these questions because I find so many people rely on today's technology (cell phones, GPS) and other people to guide them
Survival Wilderness Trip? I am planning a wilderness survival trip with a friend of mine. We are both moderately experienced in camping, fire starting and hunting. We have been researching alot now and are planning to go around spring break for about a week. we will only travel about 1 mile into the woods and not move around except for hunting varmints and small game. Does any one have any suggestions for what we should bring. We have a basic list but if you could list a very detailed list so we can see if we have overlooked anything it would be greatly appreciated...thanks in advance! Compass, knife, flint, lots of rope, tarp, whistle, tin can, flint and steel, lighter, fishing line, mirror, fish hooks and supplies, duct tape, .20 cal air gun, ammo, fishing net, axe, canteen, topographical map, clothes, ziploc bags, flashlight, food (just in case we can't find anything, handbook on edible plants in the area.
Do people practice wilderness survival...? Do people from civilization (not born into indiginous life) learn wilderness survival skills and go live in the woods?
Fishing scenario and wilderness survival? Scenario: I'm in a wilderness survival situation. I have my fishing rod and tackle box and I just caught a big pike for food. I've cleaned the fish and put it on the fire to cook it. I have no other gear because it was in my boat that sank in 30 m of water. There is tons of bears in the area. How do I get rid of the fish smell off my hands so that I don't attract the bears to where I am or going (to get myself out of there)? What natural things can I find in the Canadian wilderness to get rid of the fish smell? If you have links to pictures of plants, bark, whatever, I'd appreciate it. Thank you.
books on wilderness survival? Hi can anyone recommend books on wilderness survival, or how to live off the land? i'm doing some research for a project, it has to be very specific, and detailed. I already have one book (it's at home, I'm at work) that my dad got from reader's digest when I was like, 12. It's very helpful, but I want more information on plants, wildlife and gathering food in northern North America, like Maine, Canada, etc. Thanks!
Best rifle for wilderness survival situations (Canada) - no autos. or prohibited please? I would like to know what you think is the best rifle is to carry for wilderness survival situations in Canada and your reasons (weight, size, barrel length, dependability, caliber, ability to handle - 40 degree C or F temps, etc.) Would you use a red-dot scope or traditional cross-hair type? Keep in mind that packablity is super-important. The chances of me having to use the weapon will be rare, if ever used. I need my hands free for my trekking poles on a 125 km trip with 1000+ meters of elevation gain/loss every day. Wolves are not a threat, but cougars, a handful of black bears, and mostly Grizzly bears are a threat. Keep in mind that automatic weapons, hand guns are restricted/prohibited in Canada and are NOT allowed for recreational use for any reason. I've considered a shotgun and have narrowed it to a Benelli Supernova, M2, or M4. Sorry! You're not going to convince me of Mossberg, Remington, etc. End of story.
Would illegal immigrants accept instructions from Americans, who have taken wilderness survival training,? to survive in their own country? We can teach them how to live without modern conveniences, and live well. It does take work, but, illegal immigrants are very strong and highly intelligent. no_amnesty_06 there's water in the desert, you just have to know how to get. The illegal immigrants don't have to live in a place that is that harsh. Their forefathers most likely didn't settle in an inhabitable place. It probably is 'habitable', but it's just they'd have to work to survive and they, obviously are not really strong enough to put that much effort into it. Not so strong after all. hadenough- you understand what I'm saying. It doesn't take a lot of education to raise a few chickens, a goat, snare rabbits, go fishing, grow some corn, beans, tomatoes & other produce. Don't tell me they don't grow in a desert either. I've seen where some of those people come from and they have water; weeds grow higher than their heads, produce can too. Excuses are lame. OKAY it's been over thirty minutes, what, no rude retaliations, no "but's", no "whiners", no disputers or debaters? Only three answers in 2 hours. I guess you just can't debate the truth. Mendi8a- I'm sure a big majority of Americans would love for them to enlighten us with their great survival abilities. All they have to do is prove it by going back to their homeland and surviving and then they could just rub it all in our faces, and tell us "I'm strong, I'm a survivor, I have tenacity!!" 19 hours and counting! pancha The point is "THEY'RE FREAKING LAZY!! They won't cut up a chicken in Mexico, or work in a garden in their own homeland, they come up here and freeload and get even fatter and lazier by abusing taxpaid ( by ME) services they are NOT entitled to!! I buy chicken locally and cut it up MYSELF!! I grow MY own produce, what's their problem? LAZINESS, WORTHLESSNESS, TAX SUCKERS!!
Should you pay $3,175 to die of thurst during a wilderness survival exercise? I think it is OUTRAGEOUS that these so called "trained guides" do not know when someone is very close to death and do not know when to give a person like Dave Buschow water. These guides must not have any medical training, or if they do they don't know enough. I hope they discontinue their program and either spend time in jail, or get sued heavily for their bad judgement. the story: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,269688,00.html
