How do we prevent the social pressure to reduce our water consumption from becoming a witch hunt?

People are starting to get a bit extreme about ways to reduce our water and electricity consumption. I worry that it will turn into a witch hunt.

1. the whole global warming thing is going to be a witch hunt, lead by people who don't follow their own rules.
2. Everyone should have water tanks on their property, stop relying on other people for your water. Once you've got the tank, the only ongoing cost is getting it cleaned every so often. Cheap. Be self sufficient.
