in a matter how can john proctor be blamed for the witch trials how could he have ended it

1. he messed around with his servant Abigail which when she was kicked out later lead on to jealousy when he rejected her. Abigail lead the witch hunt hoping elizabeth would be killed and John would be left all to her. The only problem is her plan goes astray when john proctor is accused of being a witch and he refused to confess(kindof). He could have avoided this by either casting abigail off in the beginning or maybe in an odd sense... getting with her secretly rather than rejecting her.
